Fragile natural resources base makes Northeast Brazil (NEB) extremely vulnerable to climate changes. The El Ninõ is one of the phenomena associated to interannual precipitation variations in NEB and in the world. This article is a review of the knowledge improved about the phenomenon, emphasizing that it is not possible yet to have conclusive predictions, once the event presents high degree of complexity and mathematical models used come from a very short historical series.
