“Leveraging Cooperatives for Sustainable Biomass Valorization: A Cross Case Study Analysis”

Resumo

This paper explores how cooperatives can facilitate the valorization of residual agroforestry biomass, emphasizing their potential to foster sustainable development and economic prosperity. By converting agricultural and forestry waste into valuable resources, cooperatives address environmental issues and bolster economic stability in rural areas. Through collective resource management, enhanced supply chain operations, and improved market access, cooperatives provide a robust framework for advancing biomass valorization efforts.
Analyzing 13 case studies, the research finds that vertical integration of the supply chain was not observed in many cooperatives; instead, they rely on horizontal and partial vertical integration to enhance value chain efficiency. These insights highlight the effectiveness of cooperative models in advancing biomass valorization, offering valuable lessons for policymakers and stakeholders in the bioeconomy sector.

Examining the dimensions and attributes of island destination image: a literature review

Resumo

Despite the extensive research on destination image, there is no clear consensus regarding the key attributes and dimensions that define the image of island destinations. Furthermore, a systematic literature review specifically focused on assessing island destination image has not been identified. To address this gap, this study conducts a literature review aimed at identifying attributes and dimensions that shape tourists’ perceptions of islands, enabling a comprehensive measurement of their image and an exploration of practical implications for destination marketing. This research employs a content analysis methodology in its literature review. Relevant documents were retrieved from Scopus using the search terms ‘island*’ and ‘destination image.’ A total of 47 documents discussing image attributes and dimensions used to assess the island destination image were selected for analysis. Findings indicate that while the perceived image of island destinations incorporates several common attributes and dimensions typical of islands and destinations in general, their application cannot be entirely generalised and should be adapted to specific destination contexts.
This study provides both theoretical and managerial insights by identifying a comprehensive set of items that facilitate the measurement of island destination image, considering the most frequently used attributes and dimensions while accounting for the unique characteristics of island destinations. A key limitation of this research is its reliance solely on documents indexed in Scopus. Future studies may expand the scope by incorporating sources from additional scientific publication databases.

Ageing, Quality of Life and Legacy: Collaborative Methodologies with Older Persons in the Context of Social and Health Policies

Resumo

Drawing on two empirical studies, this presentation offers a reflection on the potential of collaborative methodologies in research with older persons, highlighting their relevance for the development of person-centred health and social intervention policies.
The first study applied Self- confrontation method (Hermans & Hermans-Jansen, 1995) to access older adults’ perceptions of their quality of life, using their own narratives and lived experiences to identify key factors that contribute to well-being in later life. The second study employed Photovoice (Wang & Burris, 1992) with intergenerational pairs — one older and one younger person — to explore the meanings of legacy and generativity, fostering dialogue across generations and recognising the ongoing social contributions of older individuals.
Both studies are grounded in a methodological orientation that values co-construction and ethical participation, aligned with contemporary health and social policy frameworks that promote active ageing and full citizenship in older age. The presentation will discuss how these collaborative approaches generate rich, context- sensitive data and contribute to more responsive, participatory, and effective public policy and practice in the field of ageing and social inclusion.

Factoring and Performance: Evidence from Portuguese Firms

Resumo

External financing, particularly short- term credit, plays a critical role in corporate financial management, enabling companies to meet their cash flow needs, which are essential to managing their operational cycles. As a partner in economic activities, the financial sector seeks to anticipate economic agents' needs and aspirations, quickly recognizing that liquidity is a foundational concept for the sustainability of any business. Consequently, the growth and impact of factoring operations in the Portuguese business sector have become evident over time, reflecting the rising demand for alternative financing options that address and support corporate liquidity needs. The objective of this study is to understand the factoring operation and the advantages and disadvantages it brings. By carrying out estimations based on the fixed effects model, we can understand the impact that the use of factoring has on the financial ratios of companies and, therefore, their stability over time.
To this end, a database composed of 926,593 observations of Portuguese companies was used, with a panel structure comprising a sample period between 2009 and 2022. According to the results obtained, it was possible to document that although the operation has a significant cost component, it has a positive impact on companies’ balance sheets, especially in terms of liquidity generation, which is crucial to their ability of meeting short-term obligations.
