We would like to invite all interested parties to attend the next Data Science and Public Policy Seminar . In this session, José Fernando Mendes (University of Aveiro) presents From Social Media to the Spread of Epidemics . This seminar will present some results of empirical analyses of social networks that have inspired new theories of complex networks, such as the small-world concept. Some applications of these models will be presented, with particular emphasis on the case of the spread of epidemics, namely a proposal of vaccination applied to the case of COVID19.

José Fernando Mendes is a full professor in the Physics department of the University of Aveiro. He specialises in Statistical Physics. He has carried out research into complex systems and the structure and evolution of complex networks, such as the World Wide Web, the Internet and biological networks. He is currently president of the Society for Complex Systems.
