R3EA-Renewable Energies: Economic and Externalities Assessment

Scientific Research Project
On going

What is R3EA about?

The RENEWABLE ENERGIES: ECONOMIC AND EXTERNALITY ASSESSMENT - R3EA project attempts to assess the impact of new investments in solar and wind electricity generation capacity on the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) and other harmful toxic gases, such as SO2 or NOx, for the Centre Region of Portugal. The main contribution is a global impact assessment, not only from the traditional perspective of energy generation planning, but also considering the costs and benefits of the economic and social aspects of the most relevant externalities present.

Objectives

The project seeks to:

  • Assess the impact of new investments in solar and wind electricity generation capacity on the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) and other toxic gases for the Central Region of Portugal, using a centralised planning model, based on operating and investment costs
  • Evaluate the local effects of the most relevant externalities, such as emission reductions, electricity prices, energy dependency, the creation of new business models (such as RE communities), job creation, among others
