Celeste Eusébio is an Associate Professor with Habilitation in Tourism at the Department of Economics, Management, Industrial Engineering and Tourism, of the University of Aveiro (Portugal), where she teaches several courses in tourism, since 1996. She is a full researcher at GOVCOPP (Research Unit on Governance, Competitiveness and Public Policies of University of Aveiro), since 2007, currently coordinating GOVCOPP's Research Line of Tourism and Development.
She holds a PhD in Tourism by University of Aveiro - 2006 – (Thesis title: “The Economic Impact of Tourism in Regional Economies: The Case of Central Region of Portugal”). She also has a Master in Economy from the University of Coimbra – 1998 – (Thesis title: Tourism and Foreign Exchange Policy in Portugal: The influence of exchange rates on foreign tourism demand of Portugal) and a (Pre-Bolonha 5 years’) Degree in Tourism Management and Planning from the University of Aveiro – 1995. Her research interests include tourism economics, tourism impacts, accessible tourism, sustainable tourism, social tourism, tourism forecasts and consumer behavior in tourism.
She has assumed several coordinating positions regarding the undergraduate and master courses, in the Tourism field, at the University of Aveiro. She is Coordinator of the scientific area of Tourism at University of Aveiro. In the past, she was Director of the (3 years’) Degree in Management and Planning in Tourism, Director of the (3 years’) degree in tourism, Director of the Master in Tourism Management and Planning and Vice-Director of the (3 years’) Degree in Tourism, at the University of Aveiro.
She was involved recently in several research projects. She was the responsible investigator of the research project: ACTION - Accessible tourism: Co-creation of Tourism experIence thrOugh Web-based IntelligeNt System (reference POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030376) and the co-responsible investigator of the research project: The impact of air quality on the competitiveness of the tourism destinations (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-029374). She participated as researcher in two national research projects: (i) Selling The Rural IN (urban) Gourmet Stores – establishing new liaisons between town and country through the sale and consumption of rural products (PTDC/GES-OUT/29281/2017/ POCI-01-0145-FEDER-029281) and (ii) TWINE – Co-creating sustainable Tourism & WINe Experiences in rural areas (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-032259) and in a European research project: Teaching2030 – Erasmus +.
She was coordinator of 6 research projects (examples: “Definition of a methodological framework to develop a Tourism Satellite Account for Alentejo Region of Portugal”, “Study of the evaluation of socio-economic impacts of the Senior Tourism Programs from 2001 to 2005”, “Study of the evaluation of socio-economic impacts of the Senior Health and Termalismo Programs from 1997 to 2007”). She participated as a researcher in another 10 research projects (e.g “Meanings of the Rural in Portugal: Between social representations, consumption and development strategies” (Rural Matters) - PTDC/CS-GEO/117967/2010-; “The overall rural tourism experience and sustainable local community development (ORTE) -PTDC/CS-GEO/104894/2008 - “Economically Sustainable DEMOgraphy ReverSing Decline in Peripheral RegIons” (DEMOSPIN) - PTDC/CS-GEO/104894/2008; “Study about the needs of access to recreation, leisure and tourism for people with disability in Lousã”) (Please see list below).
She is (co-author) and editor of 9 books, more than 100 articles published in international, peer-reviewed scientific journals, 61 book chapters and more than 140 papers/abstracts in proceedings of Scientific Conferences (such as International Conference on Advances in Tourism Economics, ATLAS annual conference, Tourism: State of The ART II, IASK International Conference of Advances in Tourism Research, Consumer Behavior in Tourism Symposium, International Meeting on Regional Science: The Future of The Cohesion Policy, World Conference for Graduate Research in Tourism, Hospitality and leisure, ICOT, International Conference on Tourism & Management Studies), and has acted as co-editor of one special issue of a scientific journal (Portuguese Review of Regional Studies). She was also an invited speaker in more than 17 conferences, seminars or workshops on the topics of tourism, economic impacts of tourism and social tourism.
She has participated in the organizing and scientific committees of several national and international conferences. She is member of editorial committee of The Portuguese Review of Regional Studies, and she is frequently invited to review articles of several international journals.
She has (co-)supervised more than 60 Master Thesis, she has (co-) supervised 6 PhD Thesis and she is in the supervision process of more 10 PhD Thesis. She has also served as a discussant or evaluation panel member for over 80 Master's theses and 11 PhD theses, primarily in the fields of tourism and economic development. Additionally, she has been a member of more than 20 selection boards for academic staff. In the scope of the research projects that she is coordinating as well as she coordinated in the past, she supervises the work of several research scholarships (five graduates, a master and a doctorate).
